One of the primary goals of the Students’ Science Council is to reach out to the young students and promote scientific spirit among them. The council organises various Outreach programs throughout the year in the nearby schools wherein students of the university visit schools, especially the underprivileged ones and give them a proper exposure to science. It includes scientific discussions, quizzes, scientific demonstrations, documentaries, screenings to name a few.
Since its establishment, the council has strived to popularise science within the university premises. The weekly discussions, ‘Offbeat’ is one of the recent initiatives taken by the council to do the same. Every Wednesday students from various departments assemble and take part in various scientific discussions, ranging from brainstorming sessions, talks to documentary screenings.
The discovery of DNA’s double helix structure by Watson and Crick was one such advancement that revolutionized the field of biology on 25th of April 1953. To commemorate this day, DNA day is celebrated every year. The Students Science Council of Tezpur University too celebrates this day every year with much triumph. It allows the professors and students to come together and explore the fascinating world of genetics and expand their knowledge. Quizzes are organized as well and students express their interpretation of DNA day in the form of various expressions thus continuing the legacy of celebrating the strand of life.
Celebrated annually on October 23, Mole Day commemorates Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Students' Science Council and Department of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University takes immense pride and honour to host the Mole Day celebrations every year with great enthusiasm and spirit. During the event, the speakers and the attendees shared opinions on the significance of this day and Avogadro's contribution in Science.
Every year the department of mathematical sciences, Tezpur University celebrates Pi Day on March 14th to take a closer look at the number that has obsessed generations of mathematicians for millennia. Pi starts with 3.14, which is why math fans celebrate it on March 14. The Department of Mathematical Sciences takes the conversation about PI to the common audience to spark curiosity, compelling them to ask how Pi has changed the world. On this day, the department is open for everyone with an interest into knowing how almost everything is connected to Pi and how Pi is connected to everything.
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The Student Science Council of Tezpur University celebrates Earth Day every year with great enthusiasm. The professors and students come together to spread awareness about the environment and take steps for the protection of mother Earth.
